Episode #08: The silent takeover of power by the far-right

The last decade has been a period of immense global change and challenge. We’ve witnessed everything from the global financial crisis and its lasting economic impact to human displacement and migration movement that have reshaped societies around the world.

In this context of uncertainty and upheaval, a new type of political leader has emerged: outsider far-right figures who have risen to the central political stage in countries like Brazil, Italy, and the US.

This episode explores how these politicians have skilfully used social media platforms to promote strongly nationalistic political discourses. But rather than fostering integration and solidarity amongst peoples (as social media was once hoped to do) these messages have often had the opposite effect, actively encouraging and endorsing further divisionism, creating deeper rifts within societies and between nations.

Thus, we’ll examine how these online narratives play on fears and anxieties, contributing to a more polarized and fragmented world.
